So far this quarter, Children in Wales has prepared and submitted 9 consultation responses, which include responses to various Senedd Committee’s requests to inform their forthcoming work programmes, and the Finance Committee’s scrutiny in advance of the Draft Budget. Building upon our pre-election priorities, 3 responses were submitted to the Eary Years, Children, Young People and Education Committee, prepared by our professional working groups, the Early Years Action Group and Third Sector Additional Needs Alliance, and 2 responses to the Equality, Human Rights and Social Justice Committee, including from our End Child Poverty Network Cymru. In addition, our main responses identified tacking child poverty, improving children’s mental health, early support for parents/carers, safeguarding, edge or care and support for care experienced children as some of the key priorities. Across our submissions, we also called for sustainable investment in services for children, including the children’s third sector; a greater focus on early intervention and prevention; steps to tackle health, education and environmental inequalities, and the need to fully incorporate the UNCRC.
Our responses can be accessed on the relevant Committee’s websites - Committees
We are currently preparing a response to inform the Welsh Governments National Strategy for Cancer, which is due in February 2027, highlighting the need for a dedicated focus on babies, children and young people; consideration of the impact on children’s mental health and education during and post treatment, and the need to enhance early diagnosis, support the workforce and more help for families with additional costs. We will also be engaging our members in response to the call for evidence to inform a future Culture and Sport Strategy, and draft guidance to help schools develop their mobile phone policy.
