Young people across Bridgend recently gathered at Evergreen Hall for the launch of 'Votopia', a new game designed to teach local democracy in a fun and engaging way. Hosted by the Bridgend Youth Council, the event offered a lively mix of activities, including the opportunity to play 'Votopia', as well as painting, games, music, and pizza!
Over the past several months, Children in Wales worked closely with Youth Groups and schools in Bridgend to develop the resource. The initiative aimed to give local young people a platform to express their voices and contribute to creating a meaningful educational tool for their peers.
The result?
'Votopia' – a board game that provides an interactive way to learn about the democratic process, and how young people can have a say in their community. By using a game format, 'Votopia' allows players to dive into democracy without even realising they’re learning, making it an ideal tool for young learners.
The launch event, held in March, was filled with energy as attendees eagerly participated in the game, while also enjoying a variety of fun activities including painting murals, an open mic.
The introduction of 'Votopia' marks an exciting new chapter for youth engagement in Bridgend, giving local young people an innovative way to explore the democratic process and have their voices heard. With the game now available, the Bridgend Youth Council hopes that more young people will be inspired to engage in local democracy and feel empowered to make a difference in their community.
'Votopia' isn’t just a game – it’s an opportunity for the youth of Bridgend to be part of shaping their future, one move at a time!
“I really feel listened to, the changes that have been made based on what my group were saying, it’s impressive”
“I really like that they listened and added in more colours, it looks much better!”
