25.02.16

The Welsh Government has published an Annex to data that examines the performance of pupils eligible for free school meals in the national reading and numeracy test.

The data comes from pupils in year groups 2 to 9 who are eligible for free school meals. The main results from the tests were published in August 2015, the Annex included in the most recent release provides important background and quality information for the tests.

The key results for 2015 are as follows:

  • The performance of pupils eligible for free school meals is lower than their non-eligible peers in each of the national tests
  • This group of pupils are around 3 times less likely to achieve a standardised score that is greater than 115 in each of the tests
  • This group of pupils are more than twice as likely to receive a standardised score that is below 85 in each of the tests
