Consultation on proposals to reduce restrictive practices

The Welsh Government has published draft guidance on reducing restrictive practices in childcare, education, health and social care settings, and wants the sector’s views.

The guidance is designed to help providers use restrictive practices less often, put human rights at the centre of their services, plan support around a person’s needs and find positive ways to deal with challenging behaviour.

Restrictive practises, the proposals say, should be the lowest level of restriction required to keep people safe, and be the very last option, after others have been tried. They should not be painful, embarrassing, disrespectful or punitive.

The consultation opened on the 14th October and will run until the 06th January 2019.

You can respond by visiting the consultation’s page, and there is both a young person friendly version and an easy read version.
