Estyn says that schools and colleges aren’t doing enough to support young carers, 12/06/2019 [W]

“Many secondary schools, colleges and pupil referral unites do not know which learners have a caring role at home,” according to Estyn.

Providing the right support for young carers can make a big difference to their academic success, Estyn says. The report points out good practice, and makes suggestions on how schools, colleges and pupil referral units can support this group of children better.

The report suggests having a sound way of finding out which pupils have caring roles. It also suggest having a specific member of staff who is responsible for young carers and champions their needs. The report makes eight recommendations in all.

The thematic report has been published by Estyn in response to a request for advice in the Welsh Government’s remit letter to Estyn.
