Assembly Members to debate general principles of the Children (Abolition of Defence of Reasonable Punishment) (Wales) Bill, 12/09/2019 [W]

Members of the National Assembly for Wales will debate the general principles of the Children (Abolition of Defence of Reasonable Punishment) (Wales) Bill on 17 September 19.

The Bill is aimed at removing the defence of reasonable punishment and providing children with equal legal protection to physical punishment in Wales.

On 06 August 2019, the Children, Young People and Education Committee published their report on the inquiry into the Bill’s general principles. The majority of Committee members supported the Bill, and recommended that the Welsh Government campaign to raise awareness of what the Bill will do, and ensure that there is universal support for parents across Wales.

The debate on Tuesday will ask Assembly Members to discuss the Bill and vote on whether the Bill should progress.

Children in Wales has recently completed a briefing with other national children’s charities in Wales recommending that Assembly Members vote in favour of the Bill.
