“Fab 2 days. Mel was an amazing trainer guiding us through how the process works and how we can put it into practice. Many  thanks”

“Group/partner exercises helped to put the approach into actual action – listener/speaker/coach especially enjoyed. Observing exercise with Mel demonstrating MI”

Two day course

Motivational Interviewing is a refined guidance communication style originating in the counselling field. It aims to guide clients in the process of changing many types of unhealthy behaviours including drugs and alcohol use, health behaviours like smoking, eating, sexual behaviour, adherence to medication and offending behaviour. MI strategies avoid confrontational methods, because the aim is to get the client to be the one who presents the arguments for change.

Central to MI techniques are a number of person-centred counselling skills including, open-ended questions, reflective listening, affirmations and summarising. However, while person-centred counselling is mostly non-directive, in MI these skills are used in a directive way aimed at encouraging clients to explore their ambivalence and consider change. These skills are used selectively to reinforce change talk and encourage clients to verbalise the advantages of change and then plan for it.

Course aims:

  • Have an understanding of the foundation of MI.
  • Have a better understanding of your own issues regarding change and resistance to change.
  • Have learned MI skills and techniques to enable you to feel more confident and use as appropriate in your working environment.
  • Identify the benefits and potential applications of MI in the context of the particular organisation.

Who the course is aimed at:

Practitioners and Managers working with children, young people and their families around issues of change and protecting and safeguarding children.

About the Trainer

Melanie Seddon is a former public health specialist nurse with experience of using Motivational Interviewing (MI) in substance misuse services, occupational health and most recently with people who are experiencing complicated grief.

Melanie is interested in the use of MI in non-therapeutic settings and has collaborated with Public Health Wales, Royal College of General Practitioners and a Welsh Assembly Employment project to deliver Brief Intervention workshops based on MI.  She also travels regularly to Poland to deliver MI workshops.

Workshops are experiential with plenty of time for context-bound skills practise so that participants can confidently apply the MI approach and skills on return to their workplace.

In 1998, Melanie attended a Training for Trainers course delivered by the originators of MI, Steve Rollnick and Bill Miller. She keeps up to date by attending Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers (MINT) Forums.

This course is also offered as in-house training, please contact training@childreninwales.org.uk for more information.

Please ensure to have a purchase order number to hand when making your booking. This should be obtained from your finance department.
