The Public Health (Minimum Price for Alcohol) (Wales) Act 2018 comes into force on the 2nd March 2020. It will set a floor price for alcohol, meaning that alcohol cannot be sold or supplied below that price. The act aims to reduce excessive consumption of alcohol, and the widespread harm that can be caused by extreme drinking.

Alcohol is a major cause of death and illness in Wales, with 535 alcohol related deaths in Wales in 2018, and nearly 60,000 alcohol attributable hospital admissions in 2018-19.

Some stakeholders have commented that there is the possibility of ta short term rise of people requiring additional support and seeking advice when minimum pricing is introduced. Find more key information on the law, and information on how to support others with the change here.
