An Introduction to Working with Unaccompanied Minors
 
The aim is to give participants an overview of the issues in working with unaccompanied children and will relate these to participants' day-to-day experiences. By completing this one-day course, participants will have a practical understanding of: ยท

  • Who unaccompanied children are;
  • The Asylum Determination process and how children can make a claim;
  • The legal and policy framework for support and care, including the Children Act;
  • Assessing the needs of unaccompanied children and planning for their support;
  • Some of the common issues faced by children and those working with them.

The Emotional Well-Being of Unaccompanied Minors

The course aims to demystify mental wellbeing issues affecting refugee children/young people and develop further understanding of their overall needs. It will look at effects of war and persecution on the mental wellbeing of refugee children/young people as well as give participants the tools with which to assess the institution in which they work, identify factors that are detrimental to mental wellbeing and devise strategies that are protective.

By completing this one-day course, participants will have a practical understanding of:

  • the experiences of refugee children;
  • the impact of war and persecution on mental health;
  • cultural backgrounds and coping mechanisms;
  • risk factors (loss, bereavement, separation from family);
  • protective factors and support;
  • problems encountered in the UK;
  • case-studies: strategies, organisations, methods, resources;
  • unaccompanied minors; and
  • the importance of education.
