In its meeting of 5 November 2008, the Communities and Culture Committee held a Ministerial Scrutiny session of the Minister for Social Justice and Local Government.

Points made in discussion included:

• about 50% of children in poverty live in areas that are in the top 10%  in the index of multiple deprivation
• Communities First partnerships making tackling child poverty a priority would need to demonstrate joint working with local authorities to access the outcome fund
• the Child Poverty Solutions Wales toolkit provides practical guidance on how to tackle Child Poverty
• the proposed Local Government Measure will ensure that every public agency in Wales will need to prioritize dealing with child poverty
• the child poverty target for 2010 is vulnerable due to the present economic conditions
