Children and Young People Committee, 09/10/08 [W]

In its meeting of 9 October 2008, the Children and Young People Committee heard evidence as part of its inquiry into the Parenting Action Plan.

Evidence was taken from representatives of Children in Wales, Children are Unbeatable Cymru and the Caerphilly Parent Network.

The following points were made in discussion:

  • there is no all-Wales coordination of what is going on with parenting and sometimes no coordination within different Welsh Assembly Government departments
  • although the Minister made a commitment in March 2008 to an ongoing Action Plan, it became clear that there was a total lack of resources available to deliver this
  • the Assembly Government website has no mention of parents, although the Assembly Government has produced quite a lot of resources that could be made available for parents to access
  • in England a parenting fund is ring-fenced to deliver support services for parents – this does not exist in Wales.
