In its meeting of 25 June 2008, the Rural Development Sub-Committee heard evidence from Cymdeithas yr Iaith Gymraeg as part of its inquiry into provision of rural education in Wales and reorganisation of rural schools.

The following points were made during discussion:

• there is frustration at the perceived lack of genuine consultation when schools are proposed for closure
• Welsh can be best promoted by use in small schools that form part of the community
• a survey by Cymdeithas indicated that 500 children in Carmarthenshire could be lost to Welsh-medium education if village schools were closed
