Communities and Culture Committee, 03/07/08 [W]

In its meeting of 03 July 2008, the Communities and Culture Committee heard evidence as part of its inquiry into domestic abuse.

The Committee heard evidence from the Crown Prosecution Service, the NSPCC and Cymdeithas Tai Hafan.

Points made during discussion included:

  • children and young people are often the voiceless victims of domestic abuse
  • there is a clear link between domestic abuse and child abuse
  • as the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child has not been fully adopted into UK law, children are voiceless and partly rightless victims
  • disabled children and young people are between 3.5 and 4 times more likely to experience abuse than non-disabled children
  • there is insufficient provision for young people who may be at risk of abusing

For full details, please read the Committee transcript.
