Budget 2009, 22/04/2009 [W/E/NI/S]

The Chancellor Alistair Darling published the 2009 Budget Report on 22 April 2009. It contains a number of measures that will have an impact on families with children.

These measures include:

  • Child tax credit to rise by £20 by 2010
  • An additional £100 a year to the Child Trust Fund accounts of all disabled children, with severely disabled children receiving £200 a year.
  • Grandparents and other adult family members who care for their grandchildren or other members of their family aged 12 or younger for 20 hours or more a week will be able to gain National Insurance credits toward the basic State Pension from April 2011.
  • A guaranteed job, training or work placement for all 18-24 year olds who reach 12 months unemployed.

Full details are available on the Treasury website.

Child poverty campaigners such as Save the Children, the Campaign to End Child Poverty and the Child Poverty Action Group have expressed disappointment that more was not done to help families in poverty.
