Delay in ratifying UN rights charter, 21/11/08 [W/E/NI/S]

UK Disabilities minister Jonathan Shaw has said that the government will delay the ratification of a United Nations disability rights charter until next year.

Ministers had previously indicated that the UK would ratify the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities by the end of 2008, but there have been ongoing concerns from various government departments over its implementation.

The delay was revealed during the meeting of the Joint Committee on Human Rights on 18 November.
