Crackdown on forced marriages, 25/07/08 [W/E/NI/S]

The Home Office has announced that the age at which young people can enter the UK on a marriage visa is to be increased from 18 to 21.

Records show that on average 30% of known forced marriage cases involve victims aged 21 and younger.

Other measures to be introduced include: a requirement that all sponsors register their intention to marry overseas before they leave the UK, and the power to revoke leave to remain where there is evidence that the marriage route has been abused.

Further information is available on the Home Office website.
