Borders, Citizenship and Immigration Act

The Borders, Citizenship and Immigration Act 2009 received Royal Assent on the 21 July 2009.

Key measures of the Act include:

  • A new duty on the UK Border Agency to safeguard and promote the welfare of children in its work
  • A number of changes to nationality law, including a new route to enable the children of foreign and Commonwealth members of the armed forces, and children born abroad to British mothers before 7 February 1961, to register as British Citizens;
  • Enabling students’ study to be linked to the particular institution in the UK which sponsors them under the Points Based System, extends powers to take fingerprints of foreign criminals
  • Strengthening the law on people trafficking
