Borders, Citizenship and Immigration Act

The Borders, Citizenship and Immigration Act 2009 received Royal Assent on the 21 July 2009.

Key measures of the Act include:

A new duty on the UK Border Agency to safeguard and promote the welfare of children in its work
A number of changes to nationality law, including a new route to enable the children of foreign and Commonwealth members of the armed forces, and children born abroad to British mothers before 7 February 1961, to register as British Citizens;
Enabling students’ study to be linked to the particular institution in the UK which sponsors them under the Points Based System, extends powers to take fingerprints of foreign criminals
Strengthening the law on people trafficking
