The number of primary school children walking to school fell to less than 50 per cent in 2008. In 1989–91 the proportion of children aged five to 10 walking to school in Great Britain was 62 per cent. But by 2008, this had dropped to only 48 per cent. Over the same period, the proportion of children travelling to school by car increased from 27 to 43 per cent.
