Budgeted Expenditure on Additional Learning Needs (ALN) Provision: 2009-10, 16/06/09 [W]

The latest National Statistics on Budgeted expenditure on Additional Learning Needs (ALN) Provision: 2009-10 produced by the Welsh Assembly Government.

The key points from the latest release are:

  • Total expenditure on ALN provision in 2009-10 is budgeted to be £335 million. This represents an increase of 4.5% on the previous year's budget.
  • In terms of budgeted ALN expenditure per pupil, Caerphilly has the largest budget per pupil at £943, whilst the Vale of Glamorgan has the lowest budget per pupil at £535.
  • Rhondda Cynon Taf has the largest percentage point increase at 19% whilst Newport has the largest decrease at 5%.
  • Delegated expenditure to special schools accounts for 21% of the total budgeted ALN expenditure in 2009-10. Notional allocations within nursery, primary, and secondary schools account for a further 35% of the total.  The remaining 44% is made up of money held centrally by LEAs.
  • Ceredigion delegates the highest proportion of ALN budgets to schools at 76%, whilst Isle of Anglesey delegates the lowest at 21%.
  • Total ALN expenditure per pupil for Wales in 2009-10 is budgeted to be £735.  This is made up of delegated expenditure at £410 per pupil and non-delegated expenditure at £325 per pupil.
