These statistics on abortions for women resident in Wales are taken from a statistical bulletin on abortion statistics 2008 for England and Wales published by the Department of Health.

Key facts:

  • In 2008, there were 9,078 abortions carried out for women resident in Wales, an increase of 4% on 2007.
  • 90% of abortions were carried out before 13 weeks, including 68% under 10 weeks.
  • 92% of abortions were funded by the NHS (63% in NHS hospitals and 29% in the independent sector under NHS contract); the remaining 8% were privately funded.
  • The abortion rate for women living in Wales was lower than for England.
