The Seeds of Exclusion 2009, 02/07/09 [W/E/NI/S]

The Salvation Army has published a report looking at trends amongst homeless 18-25 year olds.

The research, produced with the University of Kent and Cardiff University, involved interviews with nearly 1,000 people living in Salvation Army resettlement centres and hostels across the UK.

Findings included:

  • Almost all (94%) 18-25 year-olds felt they were neglected in childhood, compared to just under a third (30%) of the total sample and less than a quarter (23%) of respondents aged 56 years and over.
  • Those who had poor relationships with their parents during childhood (31% with their mother, or 45% with their father) were likely to have been homeless as children. Just under half (45%) of the 18-25 age group were homeless at some point in their childhood.
  • Disruptive childhoods and poor relationships with parents in early life, including abuse from family and friends, were linked with higher levels of alcohol and drug dependency.

Further information is available on the Salvation Army website.
