Best practice in mathematics for pupils aged 3 to 7 years, 02/06/09 [W]

Estyn has published a report that says that standards of teaching maths in Welsh primary schools are improving overall, but many schools do not provide enough challenge for pupils to work to their full potential.

Inspectors reported that early indications show that the introduction of the Foundation Phase with its emphasis on practical learning is helping to raise standards of achievement, especially for many boys who find mathematics challenging.

The report recommends that staff should deepen their understanding of mathematics so they can better identify what pupils need to learn next, and proposes that schools should make greater use of sharing good practice

The report is available to download from the Estyn website.
