Parenting in Wales and the delivery of the Parenting Action Plan, 19/05/09 [W]

The National Assembly for Wales’ Children and Young People Committee has published the report of its inquiry into parenting and the delivery of the Welsh Assembly Government’s Parenting Action Plan.

The Parenting Action Plan was published in December 2005. The Plan sought to ensure that parents in Wales got the advice and support they need, by setting out what the Welsh Assembly Government intended to do for parents up to March 2008.

The Committee took evidence from a range of witnesses including the Minister for Children, Education, Lifelong Learning and Skills; local authorities; voluntary organisations that work with parents, children and young people; parent network groups; and, parenting skills facilitators.

The report contains 11 recommendations, including:

  • The Welsh Assembly Government should appoint a "parenting champion".
  • The Welsh Assembly Government should produce an overarching Parenting Strategy and a new Parenting Action Plan.
  • The Welsh Assembly Government should conduct a public information and education campaign to promote positive parenting and non-violence towards children.

The report, and a summary version, are available to download from the National Assembly for Wales website.
