Committee supports Healthy Eating in Schools Measure, 6/10/2008 [W]

The Committee scruitinising the Proposed Health Eating in Schools Meausre published its report on Monday 6 October. The report states that legislation on healthy eating in schools is needed, and makes clear that the legislation should be progressed without delay.

The measure is a members measure, proposed by Jenny Randerson AM.  It will introduce new nutritional standards for school meals, based on best practice and research.  It will impose a duty on schools and local education authorities to promote healthy eating generally, and would have implications for the curriculum.  The measure would not only regulate school lunches, but will look at the drinks provided in schools, and at what is provided in tuck shops and vending machines.

The Committee found that the overwhelming majority of those giving evidence recognised the important role played by schools in encouraging healthy eating.

More information is available in the Committee’s press release, and the report can be downloaded from the National Assembly for Wales website.
