Closing the gap in a generation: Health Equity through Action on the Social Determinants of Health, 28/08/08 [W/E/NI/S]

The Commission on Social Determinants of Health has published its final report.

The Commission, which included policy makers, academics, former heads of state and former ministers of health, conducted a three-year investigation into health inequalities, including inequalities within countries as well as between countries.

The report found that a child born in a Glasgow suburb can expect a life 28 years shorter than another living only 13 kilometres away.

The report makes three overarching recommendations:

  1. Improve daily living conditions, including the circumstances in which people are born, grow, live, work and age.
  2. Tackle the inequitable distribution of power, money and resources – the structural drivers of those conditions – globally, nationally and locally.
  3. Measure and understand the problem and assess the impact of action.

The report can be downloaded from the World Health Organisation website.
