Statement on Measles and MMR, 16/06/09 [W]

Edwina Hart, Minister for Health and Social Services, has issued a written statement on Measles and MMR.

It is reported that as at 17.00 on 15 June 2009, the total number of measles cases in Wales stood at 302 with 36 people having been hospitalised.

The statement sets out the Minister’s decision not to introduce compulsory MMR vaccination for children in Wales, as it would have a negative effect on the relationship between parents and local health professionals.

A new leaflet about the importance of MMR, as well as other vaccinations, is to be developed and provided to every household in Wales.

The full statement is available on the Welsh Assembly Government website.
