Having Your Say – Young People, Participation and School Councils

Estyn, the education and training inspectorate for Wales, have launched a report looking at young people having their say in schools.

The report, commissioned by the Welsh Assembly Government, found that the impact of the school council is significant in only a few schools. In the majority of schools, the impact of the school council is limited to influencing decisions about practical arrangements, such as matters about school uniform, toilet facilities and meal options.

The report also found that only a minority of the schools surveyed have appointed pupils to be members of the governing body, in accordance with the statutory regulations, and it recommends that the Welsh Assembly Government should provide schools with further guidance on the role of associate pupil governors.

The report can be downloaded from the Estyn website.
