Primary School Councils Toolkit
Primary School Councils Toolkit
A training pack for those who want to set up, develop or run pupil-led school and class councils in primary schools. It is divided into two sections, covering training sessions for teachers and for Key Stage 2 pupils, and contains all the materials needed for training both.
The sessions include:
A step-by-step guide to setting up an effective school council
Agreeing charters of behaviour
Setting up class councils
Resolving conflict through peer mediation
Using agendas and leading discussions
The role of teachers in pupil councils
Materials provided include handouts for photocopying, OHPs and worksheets for pupils.
The pack introduces the concept of pupil councils, discusses the philosophy behind them, shows how they contribute to education for citizenship and lists some of the benefits to schools of this type of pupil involvement.
