How Safe Are Our Children?

The NSPCC has published its annual report of child protection in the UK.

The report, How Safe Are Our Children? compiles and analyses child protection data from across the four countries of the UK.

The report looks at twenty indicators to measure the extent of abuse and neglect in the UK, from the number of child homicides report by the police, to number of recorded sexual, cruelty and neglect offences, to counselling sessions with Childline and contacts with the NSPCC helpline, and online harm.

The report made a number of findings, but significantly, it found that there were increases in police-recorded child sexual offences across the UK, and 3000 crimes recorded by the police after the offence of communicating indecently with a child was introduced in England and Wales in April 2017.

The report also calls for legislation to commit social media firms and online platforms to ensure that they protect children online.

The report is available on the NSPCC’s website.
