Growing up in poverty in the UK in 2019, 15/07/2019 [W/E/S/N.I.]

17.07.19

Buttle UK has published a report into growing up in poverty in the UK.

Buttle surveyed over 1200 child support workers to find out their experiences working with children who were growing up in poverty.

The key feedback showed:

  • 60% of support workers are seeing families who can’t afford things like food, household items, fuel, more than once a week.
  • Half of support workers are seeing children fed breakfast and or dinner at school because families cannot afford to feed themselves, more than once a week.
  • 48% of support workers are seeing families unable to afford children’s clothes and shoes.

The report goes on to conclude that support workers “have seen an alarming increase in levels of destitution” and urges politicians to “offer more effective child poverty reduction strategies and policies in future.”
