Children (Abolition of Defence of Reasonable Punishment) (Wales) Bill

25.03.19

The Children (Abolition of Defence of Reasonable Punishment) (Wales) Bill was introduced to the National Assembly for Wales on 25 March 2019.

The purpose of the Bill is to abolish the common law defence of reasonable punishment in cases of assault of battery against a child, so it is it no longer available to parents or those acting in loco parentis.

The Bill is intended to support children’s rights, and also to further change attitudes to parenting so that more positive methods are used, and physical punishment is not tolerated.

You can follow the progress of the Bill on the National Assembly for Wales website.
