Cymru Ifanc – Young Wales is the new participation work that is being funded by the Welsh Government Children and Families Development Grant.  As part of the project Children in Wales will be ensuring that children and young people are heard on issues that are important to them and affect them, and that they are heard by the Welsh Government.

The core work for each year is:

  • Six participative projects with primary and secondary schools.  Each project will work in multiple schools.
  • Six participative priorities with youth forums, specialist groups and organisations across Wales.  These priorities will be chosen by young people involved in youth forums.
  • Eight awareness raising sessions on the UNCRC, participation and how to claim their rights.
  • Eight meetings between children and young people and Ministers and policy makers

We are also developing a range of methods to inform and involve young people from across Wales in the work.

The work is based on the following:

Relationship building
The project will work closely with youth forums, schools and youth organisations across Wales.  Children in Wales already has over 200 members and we are working to improve our links with specific professionals from these settings.

Empowering at a local level
Youth forums and organisations do fantastic work on issues in their local areas and we will work with them to identify national priorities for the work.  Children in Wales will bring together a national voice but also ensure that local films, reports and other materials are recognised and reported to the Welsh Government.

Reference Group
Young Wales will have a reference group of young people from our project partners (Voices from Care, Tros Gynnal, Action for Children, Barnardos, Promo Cymru, Youth Friendly).  They will inform the development of the project including the branding, and will ensure that all information is young person friendly.

Ensuring the participation of all children and young people
In addition to working with schools and youth forums we are developing ways to ensure that all children and young people can participate in Young Wales.  This will include a website, social media, briefings and magazines with information on the project and details of local and national work.  We will be working with young people to ensure that the methods are engaging and attractive.

Ensuring impact on policy
Through supporting children and young people to meet with Ministers and reporting work from across Wales, Children in Wales will ensure that their voices are listened to and have an impact on policy.  We will also ensure that we find out how the work make a difference and that this feedback is passed on to children and young people.
