Brexit and Children’s Rights in Wales

#BrexitCYPWales

Children and young people were denied an opportunity to take part in the EU Referendum which determined that the UK will withdraw from the European Union, yet will be most affected by the decision to leave.  There will also be an impact for our members including the children’s workforce which provide services to support children, young people and their families in Wales.

Children in Wales, by working in partnership with child rights organisations and alliances in Wales, the UK and Europe, are undertaking a programme of work considering the implications for children, their families and the services which support them.  The promotion and protection of children’s rights and the UNCRC is at the foundation of our work.

There still remains much uncertainty around Brexit and our programme of work will need to be responsive to change.  However, our guiding overarching principles for our work includes

  • That there is no roll back on the existing rights of children and young people in Wales as part of the Brexit negotiation process
  • That there is no roll back on the existing rights of children and young people in Wales following the date of departure
  • That children and young people have mechanisms in place for their voices to be heard as part of the Brexit process
  • That opportunities are in place for the engagement of the children’s workforce and services which work to support children, young people and their families in Wales.
  • That full compliance with the UNCRC is maintained by all decision makers throughout the process

Activities

Children in Wales are working with our members and partners, including the Wales Observatory on Human Rights of Children and Young People, Eurochild and UK Child Rights Alliances, to periodically produce a number of reports, consultation responses and briefings which can be downloaded from the Resources section of this website.  For past and future events, please see the Events section of this website.
