What is needed to end child poverty in Wales?, 25/06/09 [W]

The Joseph Rowntree Foundation has published a report on child poverty in Wales and what the Welsh Assembly Government needs to do in order to reach the 2020 target.

The report says that the Welsh Assembly Government needs a clearer, more coherent and up-to-date approach in order to reduce the number of children in Wales living in poverty, which currently stands at 30 per cent.

Recommendations include:

  • increasing help for parents to find employment;
  • improving childcare provision;
  • promoting flexible and good quality employment;
  • encouraging public and voluntary sector employers to participate in Local Employment Partnerships;
  • improving the skills and qualifications of adults; and
  • reviewing benefits, grants and allowances administered by the Welsh Assembly Government and local authorities and promote benefit take-up.

The report is available to download from the Joseph Rowntree Foundation website.
