UN expert condemns UK policies that entrench racial discrimination and inequality, 14/06/19 [W]

A new report by the UN has condemned the UK Government’s policies that entrench racial inequality.

The report, published by the Special Rapporteur on contemporary forms of racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia and related intolerance, finds that UK Government policies exacerbate discrimination, stoke xenophobic sentiment and further entrench racial inequality.

The racial disparities in health, education, employment, housing, surveillance, police interactions, prosecutions and incarceration were cited in the report.

While legislation exists to combat discrimination, inequalities in areas of gender, race, ethnicity, religion and disability status continue to affect citizens’ life chances across the UK.

Austerity measures have had a detrimental affect on racial and ethnic minority communities, while policies on counter-extremism and immigration have stoked xenophobia and racism, and turned public institutions into “border check points”, potentially violating human rights.
