Social media use in education, 06/03/13 [W]

Education Minister Leighton Andrews has written to Welsh local authorities asking them to take a more positive use of social media in schools.

In 2006, local authorities were asked to bloack social media sites in schools, but it is now felt that this can be revisited. Social media and the internet in general have become part of daily life, and they can be used safely in schools to enhance education.

Wales was the first country in the UK to introduce the teaching of safe internet use into schools. The approach meant allowing children to use the internet while be supervised to learn safe and considerate online behaviours, then developing this independently to manage their own risks.
