Presiding Officer and Deputy Presiding Officer Elected, 9/5/07 [W]

The first plenary session of the new National Assembly for Wales elected Lord Dafydd Elis-Thomas to serve as Presiding Officer.   Lord Elis-Thomas is the Plaid Cymru Assembly Member for Dwyfor Meirionnydd.  This is the third time that he has taken up the role.   The position of Deputy Presiding Officer went to Rosemary Butler the Labour Assembly member for Newport West.

The Presiding Office of the National Assembly for Wales is responsible for its smooth functioning. The Presiding Officer chairs the plenary sessions of the Assembly. He/she is also responsible for the interpretation of the Standing Orders the legal framework, which regulates the procedures of the Assembly.
