Plan to make young care leavers exempt from council tax from 01 April 2019, 13/01/2019 [W]

Young care leavers will no longer need to pay council tax, in a plan announced by Finance Minister, Rebecca Evans AM.

The regulations will be introduced to the National Assembly for Wales in early March. They come after a consultation on whether or not care leavers should pay council tax.

91% of people who responded to the consultation supported the proposal, and 80% said the age should extend to 25.

The Welsh Government said: “The principle of exempting care leavers from paying council tax has been widely accepted for some time, but the level of support available to care leavers across Wales has been inconsistent.”

It is hoped that this plan will help to make council tax fairer across Wales.
