Local Authority Child Protection Registers, 2009, 24/02/10 [W]

The latest National Statistics about children on child protection registers in Wales produced by the Local Government Data Unit ~ Wales.

Main findings for the year ending 31 March 2009:

  • There were 2,510 children (including unborn children) on child protection registers at 31 March 2009. This is an increase of 190 or 8% from the 2,320 at 31 March 2008. This represents a rate of 40 children per 10,000 population aged under 18.
  • There were 1,265 boys, 1,235 girls and 10 unborn children on the registers at 31 March 2009. A large proportion of children on child protection registers were aged one to four (32%). There was a larger number of boys than girls in this age group.
  • The highest number of registrations was shown in categories involving neglect (48%). This category of abuse was stated more frequently than any other category of abuse (note that registrations may state more than one category of abuse).
  • The lowest category of abuse was the risk of sexual abuse which was stated in 9% of registrations (note that registrations may state more than one category of abuse).
  • 3,060 children were added to registers during the year ending 31 March 2009, an increase of 3% from the previous year. The number of children removed from the registers during the year decreased by 2% to 2,900.
