External Intervention Board for Swansea Children’s Services, 24/03/09 [W]

Gwenda Thomas, Deputy Minister for Social Services, has announced that an external intervention board is to be set up to correct performance failings in the City and County of Swansea’s children’s services.

The board, the first to be created in Wales, has been established using powers under section 84 of the Children Act 1989. The board will have the power to require the local authority to take all reasonable steps to fulfil its responsibilities.

The move follows serious concerns raised by an inspection by the Care and Social Services Inspectorate Wales in 2007. Swansea Council has two weeks to respond to the proposal.
