Concern over impact of welfare cuts in Wales, 01/04/13 [W]

Huw Lewis, Minister for Communities and Tackling Poverty, has warned that changes to the benefits system coming into force today will have a damaging effect on Welsh families and communities.

The Minister is concerned that many will find it harder than ever to make ends meet after the UK Government’s changes to welfare. Working families on low to middle incomes will be the worst affected, along with the disabled.

Wales has a higher dependence on welfare benefits than Great Britain as a whole, with 18.4 per cent of the working-age population in Wales claiming welfare benefits compared to the Great Britain average of 14.5 per cent.

The new Communities and Tackling Poverty Ministerial portfolio was set up in March. Huw Lewis AM has the responsibility for renewing the Government’s efforts in tackling poverty, creating opportunity for all and mitigating the worst effects of the UK Government’s welfare reform agenda.
