Changes to Britain’s Immigration Systems and Strategy, 16/10/07 [W/E/S]

A 12-month programme of changes to Britain’s immigration systems and strategy were set out by Home Office Minister Liam Byrne on 16 October 2007.    A new points-based system, similar to that used in Australia is to be introduced from next year.  Other changes include:

  • Fingerprint visas for three-quarters of the world’s population
  • A single border force with new powers.
  • A requirement on foreign nationals to carry ID cards

The announcements coincided with the publications of a cross-government report, The Economic and Fiscal Impact of Immigration.
