Calls for Welsh Government to review post-adoption support, 23/03/16 [W]

The National Assembly for Wales’ Children and Young People Committee is calling on the Welsh Government to review the availability of post-adoption support in Wales.

The Children and Young People Committee has been reviewing Welsh Government’s progress following the 2012 inquiry into adoption services. The Committee has received positive feedback from stakeholders, prospective adopters and parents who have already adopted for the newly established National Adoption Service, which has seen improvements to the early stages of the adoption process. However, concerns have been raised about the lack of progress in some of the more challenging policy and practice areas.

Some of the concerns raised by the Committee include:

  • Regional variation across Wales
  • A lack of post-adoption support, which can have a serious impact on children and their families
  • The majority of adopted children are not being provided with quality life-story work
