Bookstart programme returns for 2014, 17/03/14 [W]

Bookstart Super Box Programme offers early years workers the opportunity to attend a conference near to them and to receive books for free.

Gwynedd Language and Play participated last year and Gwenda Lloyd Williams, LAP Coordinator, has kindly written about how the team used the resources within their sessions.

“Weithiau Dwi’n teimlo’n HEULOG” – This book was a big hit with both the Language and Play team and the families who attend our groups. We saw an opportunity to use the book as part of our Language and Play, Sharing Books and Stories and also Story and movement programme. Each page had something interesting to offer. After sharing, reading and discussing the book with our families, the children then  had an  opportunity to make and decorate crowns, trumpets, stick animal puppets and butterflies so that they could use them to act out pages of the book. The children had fun pulling faces into large mirrors. We saw a lot of tongues, sad, happy and funny faces. We sang “Mr Hapus ydw I” and “Mr Trist Ydw I”. There were opportunity to be very loud, blowing into their trumpets and very quiet like a butterfly, very small like a mouse and very tall like a giraffe. Wearing their decorated crowns to be “BRENIN y plas” was a joy to see. The children enjoyed finding the different animals in the book and acting out their movement and sounds. Ending the story gave the children and their parents the chance to cuddle up and share a quiet moment. We ended the story session with singing “Heno Heno”.

Parents enjoyed what this book had to offer as they could clearly see the fun and enjoyment their children were having by acting out the adventures of the characters in the book. Parents recognised emotions in the book that they have seen in their children at some point.

In our role as Language and Play workers we encourage parents to use books to their full potential. We hope that this book showed parents that a book is not only for reading from beginning to end but to stop a while and capture what each page has to offer.
