One day course 

It’s always difficult telling anyone difficult information but telling children can often be that much more difficult. 

This one day training course will help participants connect with children and young people and to develop tools and strategies to help support children in the best way possible. Whether it is a Large, small group and individual work, there will be scenarios, video clips and the opportunity for participants to try out skills in a safe environment with a supportive and experienced facilitator.

This course is aimed at practitioners working with children and young people, teachers, foster carers, social workers and family liaison workers

Learning Outcomes: 

Creating the right environment to support difficult conversations – Learners will discuss how to effectively prepare for telling children difficult information, how to respond and to follow up afterwards. 

Develop skills to connect with children that support effective communication of difficult information using an age appropriate and sensitive approach  – Leaners will gain an understanding of the developmental milestones and cognitive changes that may effect the ability of children to understand and process information as well as the ability to recall early memories.   

Gather a range of tools and strategies to support children convey and manage their emotions – Learners will examine and explore a range of tools and resources including Winston’s Wish, Mary Corrigans Tools for Talking about Feelings as well as ways of asking questions. 

Explore the impact of children’s experiences on their ability to communicate their feelings and needs – Learners will gain an understanding of the legal basis for sharing information with children and the variety of ways that children might respond to difficult information. 

 Objectives  By the end of the training delegates will: 

  • Have an understanding of the impact of children’s experiences on their emotional literacy 
  • Have developed a range of skills to manage effective age appropriate communication with children and young people 
  • Become familiar with the tools to develop and coach emotional literacy in children and young people
