One Day Course

This 1-day introductory training will support practitioners to develop their understanding of the relationship between Migration and Welfare in a Welsh context. Through the use of a wide range of resources and real life situations it will explore issues which impact upon the role of Public Authorities and their practitioners in 21st century Wales when working with Migrant children and their families .

A number of areas will make up the framework of the training with the morning focusing upon law and policy whilst the afternoon will focus upon practice issues.  The training is suitable for people working in the fields of Social Care, Health and Family Support.

MORNING

  • Immigration Law (UK and European / Refugee Convention 1951)
  • The policy context of working with Migrants in Wales
  • Different types of Migration
  • The role and responsibilities of the Local Authority and other agencies
  • Immigration Law

AFTERNOON

Practice issues which will include

  • No recourse to Public Funds
  • Age Assessment
  • Cultural Competence
  • Use of Interpreters
  • Safeguarding

The course will be facilitated by Mike Lewis of Hawliau Consultancy and will be supported by an extensive resource pack.

Having qualified as a social worker in 1986 Mike has worked in a number of Local Authorities and Third Sector Organisations. Prior to setting up Hawliau in April 2013 Mike was CEO of the Welsh Refugee Council. In terms of Migration Practice Mike is visiting Lecturer on the MA in Social Work at Cardiff University where he teaches Migration.In  addition at the University of Lapland where he teaches a Module on Migration & Social Protection. Mike also provides Expert Opinions.in relation to this area of practice

He is a former trustee of WCVA and Linc Housing Association and is currently Chair of Cardiff and Vale Children’s Contact Centre.
