A One Day Course

‘Getting to Grips’ is a one day course, which develops the themes of our highly successful ‘Bigger Picture’ half day workshops we delivered across Wales in December and January, through funding from the Welsh Government.   The course will support people from a wide range of organisations to understand the distinctive Welsh legislative and policy framework for children and families, that has developed as a result of increasing devolution from Westminster.

The training will consider current Welsh legislation around children and families, Welsh Government policy and strategies on issues including how children’s rights are being addressed through  initiatives on child poverty, health, social care and education. The course will explore Welsh government programmes including Families First, Flying Start, Communities First and Integrated Family Support considering the roles and priorities of different sectors involved in delivering these, and the challenges faced by everyone.

Learning Outcomes

Participants will:

  • Gain an overview of the political context and processes that shape policy in Wales
  • Learn about Welsh Government policies and strategies relevant to children and young people
  • Understand the national priorities for children and family services
  • Explore how your organisation and key areas of work fit with the main policy areas concerning children, young people and families.

This course is for practitioners, manager and policy makers from all sectors and all organisations, keen to explore how their area of work fits in with the bigger picture of child and family policy in Wales. It will help organisations to prepare for predicted changes and to operate effectively within a multi-agency context.

About the trainer

Claire Sharp has worked with children and young people, in the voluntary and statutory sector, for over twenty years and currently works as Children in Wales’ Training Officer. Claire spent many years working in the field of domestic abuse, directly supporting children and young people in refuges and in the community, before moving on to manage Children’s Services at Welsh Women’s Aid. She has an ongoing interest in encouraging education and learning, in its broadest sense, having worked both as a primary teacher and in the supervision and assessment of student social workers in child and family teams.

Claire now trains practitioners from a variety of services, on a wide range of issues, including children’s rights and child protection. Claire has also delivered Early Support training, a programme aimed to improve recognition and support for disabled children and their families through a multi-agency approach with the child at the centre. Claire is a volunteer with UCAN Productions, a performance and creative arts co-operative for blind and partially sighted children, young people and their friends, supporting the children to have opportunities to play and socialise and develop skills and confidence.

This course is also offered as in-house training, please contact training@childreninwales.org.uk for more information.
