Since the International Congress of 2003, Children in Wales in partnership with Funky Dragon, has been active in the setting up of a network of young disabled people. The Wales Network of Young Disabled People has the following as its aims:

Aims

The project aims to give young disabled people from across Wales opportunities to:

  • Meet and have fun
  • Understand their rights
  • Raise issues of concern to them in their everyday lives
  • Have a voice in decisions affecting them and their peers
  • Build their capacity to become effective agents in the decision making process

Since the network was set up, the members have worked really hard and looked at lots of things to do with young disabled peoples rights. Well done everybody.

Members have looked at:

  • Disability Discrimination Act
  • Social and Medical Model of Disability
  • Extending Entitlements.
  • United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child

They have also:

  • Held 5 successful residential meetings
  • Elected steering group representatives
  • Held several steering group meeting
  • Looked at the Rights and Issues for young disabled people in Wales
  • Looked at ways of taking your issues forward

The Website (www.ydpn.co.uk) is now being used both by members and people interested in the Network. If you or your organisation wish to put a webpage on the site then you will be able to access the site and put your information and a picture on one of its pages, or if you have any events or news that you would like to share then this can also be put on the site. Members will not able to see until it has been checked out by the coordinator.
