Home Accident Prevention Wales (HAP Wales)
Home Accident Prevention Wales (HAP Wales)

HAP Wales, (previously the Wales Home Safety Council) was established over 20 years ago to stimulate, support, co-ordinate and promote the work of accident prevention in the home. Membership of the organisation is open to Local Authorities, statutory, voluntary and commercial organisations (where appropriate).

Despite the large numbers of people attending A&E every year due to a home accident, the organisation has previously struggled to gain representation from all of the 22 local authorities.  These challenges led to a review of the the Wales Home Safety Council. To determine whether it has a role to play in influencing home accident prevention in Wales, a working group was established to undertake a review.  This group considered many issues, including:

  • The scale of the home accident problem in Wales
  • Current accident prevention work across Wales
  • Any identified gaps
  • The structure of the organisation
  • How the organisation adds value - currently and in the future
  • The way forward and recommendations

The review has identified the need for a lead on home accident prevention and has recommended organisational and structural changes.  These changes are being fully embraced by the organisation and they are now looking forward to a brighter, more positive future for the prevention of home accidents in Wales.

The Review of the Wales Home Safety Council is available to download.
