Children’s Rights Training for Professionals
Children’s Rights Training for Professionals

Children in Wales has developed a series of training resources, to train professionals on the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC). The work was commissioned by the Welsh government and funded through the European Social Fund Reach the Heights Programme.

The training and resources have been developed help ensure that key professionals across Wales, who work with children and young people, are aware of and understand the principles of the UNCRC.  The training helps professionals support children and young people to access their rights in all situations. It also enables them to apply their knowledge and understanding of children’s rights through their practice and to identify sources of support in realising children’s rights.

The training is aimed particularly at professionals working in:

  • Education
  • Social Work
  • Health
  • Police & Law
  • Youth Justice

The training consists of:

  • An introduction to the UNCRC. This is a non-sector-specific half day course, suitable for a range of professionals working in the public and voluntary sector. It can either be used as a standalone course or can be followed by either:
  • Pre-qualification training - a half day training which contains sector specific modules, but which is appropriate for those who have not yet gained their professional qualification, or
  • Post-qualification training - a half day training with sector specific modules, which addresses practice issues relevant for newly qualified staff and those with a wealth of experience.

The pre and post qualification training sessions have been adapted so that the practice examples and case studies provided in them are relevant to specific  sectors

The materials can be downloaded from the UNCRC Lets Get it Right website    Children in Wales provides commissioned training on Children’s Rights, and can deliver training sessions to professionals in a wide variety of settings.  For more information contact: Claire Sharp, Training Officer at Children in Wales, E-mail: claire.sharp@childreninwales.org.uk
